A 90-second reset for parents who are about to lose it

You do not need a yoga class, a nap, or a vacation to calm your nervous system. You need about ninety seconds. The body's stress response is fast to trigger and fast to settle if you give it the right signals. This reset is designed for real life: standing at the sink, in the doorway, or parked in the car.

Step 1: Name it out loud

Say to yourself: 'I'm activated.' Naming the state shifts activity from the reactive brain to the thinking brain. It also creates a tiny pause between trigger and response.

Step 2: Physiological sigh

Inhale through your nose, then take one more quick sip of air. Exhale slowly through your mouth. Repeat twice. The double inhale and long exhale offload carbon dioxide and signal safety to the nervous system.

Step 3: Ground the body

Press both feet flat into the floor. Feel the weight in your heels. Unclench your jaw and drop your shoulders. Say silently: 'This moment is not an emergency.'

Step 4: Choose the next sentence

Decide what you will say before you open the door. One sentence. Something like: 'I'm here. We're going to figure this out together.' That one sentence sets the tone.

What you can say in the moment

Walking back into the room

  • "I'm here. I took a breath."
  • "We're going to handle this together, and I'm not going to yell."
  • "Tell me what feels hardest right now."
